What defines creativity?

It’s the capacity to look at the world with fresh eyes and to see things that other people can’t see. That’s very global. If you get down to specific areas, then it’s the ability to create something new that is inspiring as literature and music are, or something that opens up the universe as let’s say physics does, or something that’s extremely useful like the inventions of airplanes, and cars, and computers. All those kinds of things … so that’s genius or creativity, and it’s not the same thing as intelligence.

Where will the future of neuroscience take us?

You know, neuroscience is a young field. It has only been around for about 25, 30 years.
We’ve had a whole era where we’ve been dissecting the components of memory, the components of language, and those kinds of things. And we still have very important domains of human life that we are struggling to understand. Things like creativity. Things like moral choice. We have so many philosophical and moral questions that are not being addressed. I mean there is this general feeling in science that if you ask a big question like how does the brain think creatively? That’s considered to be less scientific, and that’s kind of sad, because we really need to be asking the big questions and answering them.

The difference between intelligence and executive function

There are some skills that are involved in executive functioning, self-organization of behaviour, conscious control, that realty are over and above basic or general intelligence. So we can think about executive function as one aspect having to do with how you manage your intelligence, how you mange your emotional life.
